The Oscar Enrique Gomez Memorial Scholarship was created to continue the legacy of a fallen hero who sacrificed much of his youth to social justice. Oscar meant a lot to his entire circle of friends who made up a large part of his extended family across the southwestern United States. He also loved his family dearly.
He was a beloved student from Baldwin Park who dreamed of improving his community after completing his college degree. His community was a motivating factor in his pursuit of higher education and it was a driving force in all his attempts to learn and connect with other people's hardships.
As a sign of gratitude, some of his close friends wanted to show how much his friendship meant, so they created a scholarship specifically aimed at assisting graduates that will one day make a positive social impact. This is why the Oscar Enrique Gomez Memorial Scholarship helps less fortunate youth who can benefit from an opportunity grant. The OEG is designed to inspire and motivate youth to achieve a higher education and help improve their community.
As present only 12th grade students are eligible. $1,000.00 is awarded each year to selected seniors, for use in continuing thier education beyond high school. We are AB540 friendly and do NOT require a minimum GPA, but are looking for motivated candidates whose families need the financial assistance.
The 2011 recipients were Maria Rodriguez and Alejandro Urias. You two are amazing!
Thank you to all seniors who applied and all of you who donated to our scholarship.
Best wishes,
The L.U.C.H.A. Board of Directors |
